Counselling Services in School

How does a contact... counsellor work?

contact... counsellors in schools mainly work short term with adolescents. There are a number of good reasons why short-term work is valuable:

There are of course difficulties in short-term work and it is not suitable for everyone. For instance, those who are actively suicidal are probably not appropriate and those who are very poorly motivated may struggle or need longer term work to get the best out of counselling. Similarly, those with chronic addictions are probably best referred on to specialist agencies. Some young people may have symptoms that suggest the need for a psychiatric assessment before counselling can commence.

We have found however, that an important factor is the attitude of the counsellor. Short-term work demands good assessment skills, an understanding of behavioural development and an ability to be clearly focused. The counsellor needs to be much more active, which is why we require our counsellors to be highly qualified and trained.

contact... counsellors understand the need to work in a specific way with this difficult age group:-

  • Work in a different way from the process used when counselling children or adults
  • Use particular skills and strategies which enhance the adolescent counselling conversation.
  • Offer a special type of client counsellor relationship which is appropriate for them..
